According to legend, in 1842 Godfrey Barnsley decided that he wanted to create a beautiful home for his wife Julia. He began building the massive estate, but before it was finished, his wife fell ill and passed away. Godfrey was heartbroken and gave up construction of the estate. However, when he was in the formal gardens one evening the spirit of his departed with came to him and told him to finish building, which he did.

The estate went through more hard times during the Civil War and then it suffered a tornado. By 1988, more than 140 years after it began, the estate was sold and restored to its former glory. The estate then became Barnsley Gardens, the resort that so many people love and visit today.
